One of the best fights I have seen live albeit on TV. Benn/McLellan was pretty astonishing too - Saw that in a packed Irish pub near the Elephant. Almost as much fighting going on in the pub - all in all a night out I will remember for ever.

Who wouldn't? Arguably the greatest three rounds ever. But because it was over quickly it wasn't the same. The fight that I compare most often to the Thrilla in Manila is Benn Mcclellan, but there's been others.

There's been a few fights up there like this one, but because of the fame of the two involved this tends to be quoted most frequently, at least by old bastards like me.
it's the greatest example of why boxing transcends any other sport in terms of its drama and the demands it makes on those taking part. Everything else pales by comparison.
Probably the Tour de France takes greater lung power, as does winning a marathon at world level. Rowing looks brutal and leaves the participants wasted and fainting on their oars.
Nothing, however, compares with what's needed to climb into the ring with one of the hardest men on the planet, who on top of his innate diamond hardness, has trained for years with the express aim of taking your fucking head off.
Ali and Frazier fought, literally, to the point of death. If sport is surrogate war, this is as near as it gets.

To answer the OP - money.
Absolutely brutal fight, Ali had a ridiculous chin and that probably contributed to the way he was in the end. Ali was about to quit "I'm done" before Eddie Futch called it off at the the 14th. Frazier genuinely hated Ali for all the trash trash talk Ali had given him including calling him an Uncle Tom. Saw a documentary on Joe Frazier that was brilliant and he still held a grudge "You see how Ali is now? I did that to him". He was smiling slyly.

Been watching a few Youtube videos of boxing lately, that Rocky Marciano was one mean slugger, I say slugger as opposed to a boxer, a bit like Mike Tyson in that regard, Marciano, unbeaten over 49 fights most by KO, unbelievable record

I just meant that both events were sought by the respective (less than ideal) heads of states.

The Thrilla was similar to the Rumble in the Jungle wasn't it?
Less squeamish about giving dictators good publicity back then, apparently.

Makes perfect sense to hold it there. Whenever Tagalog speakers are near me I get the urge to punch the living daylights out of everyone. Ugly language.

https://www.thenational.ae/sport/how-muhammad-ali-s-thrilla-in-manila-left-its-mark-on-the-philippines-1.209910
From Wikepedia:
Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos sought to hold the bout in Metro Manila and sponsor it in order to put attention on the Philippines as a 'great' nation, having declared martial law three years earlier (1972).
Sounds like Marcos basically stumped up the dosh for it, Len.
